Roselyne Bachelot, French Minister of Health is assessing the risks posed by cosmetics during pregnancy and for children. The aim is to investigate the toxicity of some chemical substances, like phthalates and parabens.

"I'd like to investigate, in collaboration with industry, the possibility of put a logo on products that can be toxic to reproduction indicates that they are not recommended for use by pregnant women and small children, "said Roselyne Bachelot on November 26 during a symposium in Paris.

The French cosmetics industry uses only one phthalate: diethylphthalate or DEP, as well as 4 parabens: methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl parabens. How serious are for our health, especially for pregnant women and young children? Do they have effects on male and female reproductive organs?

What are phthalates and parabens?

Phthalates and Parabens are chemicals industrial used in many cosmetics. Have been used for years in hair products, deodorants, body lotions, perfumes and nail polishes, and so on. Phthalates are used as fragrance ingredients, plasticizers and solvents, while parabens preservatives.

There is no "credible evidence that these chemicals have ever caused a health problem of a human being. However, some suggest these chemical families may increase the risk of birth defects, decreased sperm deformities in babies, and cancer. The problem has to do with the cumulative effect of these substances, which can be very toxic.

What about North America?

France is a leader in terms of safety of cosmetics as compared to North America. For example, a 2003 directive of the European Union ban on phthalates in cosmetics sold in Europe, but U.S. and Canadian regulators have not been so active. Family phthalates is not regulated in the U.S. and Canada. Only one state regulates the use of some phthalates: the State of California.
