USDA defines "organic"

There is no doubt that the organic food movement is in full swing. The number of markets Organic farming is increasing and the amount of organic products that are available is increasing.

Tired of having toxins in food, Consumers are demanding more organic foods. The problem has been that there are no rules established to determine exactly what "organic" means. Farmers who use fertilizers had a farm just yet that threw off toxic gases in the air could still impose an "organic" label on their products.

Now everyone, if that has changed. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) has finally developed a set of rules which specifically define "certified organic". In the past, organic food certification was handled by various state and private agencies. These new rules, which only apply to foodstuffs, will be enforceable and establishes penalties for false organic.

• To be labeled organic, all fresh or prepared foods sold in the U.S., including imports, must be produced according to national organic standards and certified by a inspection agency accredited by USDA.

• Before your crops can be certified, all organic farmers must use only materials approved that will not harm humans, animals or soil life. It must develop a management plan for the organic farm, keep detailed records and be inspected annually by an accredited certification body. All companies that manufacture organic food products must follow similar strict requirements.

• The rules contained in the Wisconsin Organic website, www.wiorganics.com / organic_usda.htm, prohibit the use of all of the following potentially unsafe materials and practices:

Toxic synthetic pesticides and fertilizers

A farm field must be free of these substances for at least 3 years prior to organic crop certificate can be grown in it.

Genetically modified (GM) seeds and other materials

Many products now contain non-organic food GE. Because the government has so far refused to require labeling of GE foods, the only way to avoid that for sure is to buy certified organic products.

Sewage Sludge

Organic farmers like to recycle human waste safely in fertilizers for soil, but this is not possible until the country has a system of sewage collection keeps toxic chemicals and heavy metals from contaminated sewage sludge (a sometimes called "biosolids"). For now, however, the USDA prohibits the use of sewage sludge in organic food production. Sludge sludge is widely used by organic farmers.

Fresh manure

For years, organic farmers have followed voluntarily to the proper care of animals and manure composting techniques to protect against transmission of foodborne diseases. The new rules make those voluntary practices and will require a mandatory waiting period, probably 90 or 120 days between application of raw manure and harvest of organic crops that can be eaten raw. Conventional farmers, who also uses a lot of raw manure because of its low cost, however, not governed by national restrictions on the use of raw manure.

The confinement of animals

The new rules require that organic eggs, meat and dairy products from animals given feed that is 100 percent organic. In most cases require that animals have access to activities outdoor pastures and prohibiting severe confinement conditions often used in non-organic factory farms.

Irradiation

The USDA Organic Regulations ban the controversial technology being exposed to radiation to kill microorganisms. Beef producers are beginning to radiate not organic meat and unsanitary conditions in the factories of food of animal origin are contamination of beef and poultry diseases food-borne organisms.

Antibiotics and growth hormones

As with most certification processes, which will be a long time. A farmer who produces less than 5,000 dollars worth of organic products annually are exempt from these resolutions.

As with anything, no opposition to this set standards. This government is not cooperating with existing organizations that have set standards for what constitutes organic.

The opposition comes prices. Opponents hope that if there is a cost, it is not transmitted to organic producers. They prefer to see costs being absorbed by the absence of organic farmers. I hope it's an incentive for them to be organic.

This is a step in the right direction, and undoubtedly will lead to regulations for other products labeled body, such as cleaning products and cloth.
