Your skin: What is your skin made of?

I bet most of us use some type of facial sunscreen in the summer. Especially those of us who are fair-skinned like me. We put gobs of it to prevent sunburn. But what about the fall? Or in winter? Is facial sunscreen use to anyone during these seasons? Probably not. Why? Perhaps because we have been programmed to use it only for the summer.

Within 15 minutes your skin can be damaged by the sun. Of course it could take longer in other seasons, but it could happen. And although you can not burn, over time your skin will look more and lose that youthful look.

The fact is that the skin is the largest organ and needs to be protected, especially your face, as it derives most of exposure. So how do you protect it? By using facial sunscreen.

So what is sunscreen? Sunscreen is a lotion physically blocking the sun's rays, especially UVB and UVA. Facial sun block usually contains two chemicals, zinc oxide and titanium oxide that radiation block. Check your suntan lotion bottle and read the label. If you see the titanium oxide and zinc oxide, have sunscreen.

Sunscreen can come in a variety of forms of creams, gels, spray on, sticks, etc. I would say that the lotions are the most popular type of facial sunscreen. You can use the spray in types, but be careful not to spray near the eyes. The aerosol may sting temporarily if you should get in your eye. If you have young children you know to use the cartridge-type sunscreen. It allows you to have more control in the application and does not run. Whatever the type of facial sunscreen you choose, provided that the test area small or even better see a dermatologist if you have sensitive skin.
