Is there an epidemic of cancer?
Servan-Schreiber describes an epidemic of cancer in most countries rich world. Since 1940 the number of cancers has increased in all industrialized countries. This trend has been recovering since 1975 and is particularly striking in the young. In some European countries like France, the cancer rate has increased by 60 percent in the last twenty years. The incidence of prostate cancer cancer has increased by 200 percent in some European countries between 1978 and 2000 by 258 percent in the U.S. during the same period.
The argument that the increase is due to selection principles leading to more diagnoses does not hold. The increase in cancers that are not routinely screened for is equally striking, if not more, than they are.
What is behind the increase in cancer?
According to the director general of the Organization World Health Organization (WHO), "up to 80 per cent of cancers can be influenced by external factors such as lifestyle and environment." In particular, Three main factors have changed in our environment since the Second World War:
1. Adding large quantities of highly refined sugar to our diet
2. Changes in methods of agriculture and animal husbandry, and as a result, our food
3. Exposure to a large number of chemicals that did not exist before 1940.
The anti-cancer diet
Dr. Servan-Schreiber, recommends a balanced diet Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils, low in animal protein and dairy products and high in fresh (preferably organic), fruits and vegetables. The book comes with a guide practical shopping recommends a number of foods that fight the growth of cancer in the body.
Chemicals and cancer
Of course, what interests me most is the influence of the chemicals in our environment in the increase in cancer. Here is an excerpt from book:
"WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer has a list of carcinogens (cancer causing) substances in the environment. In the past thirty years, has been tested 900 potential culprits (a small proportion of over 100,000 molecules released by industry since 1940 at a rate of several million tonnes per year).
"Among these 900 products submitted to the International Agency for Research on Cancer ... only one has been recognized as not carcinogenic. Ninety-five have been identified as a "known carcinogen" (ie, there has been sufficient epidemiological studies and animal research to establish the cause and effect).
"Three hundred and seven are" likely "or" possible " carcinogens. Four hundred and ninety seven remain "ungraded", which means they have not been sufficiently studied. "
In many cases, these substances are still widely used. Of course, employers argue that consumers are exposed to very low levels of these substances. However, a trial 400 chemicals (a representative sample of 75,000 in the market at the time) found that 5-10 percent of these carcinogenic to humans.
Five to ten percent of the 75,000 media who are regularly exposed to 3.750 to 7.500 carcinogens, which makes it less encouraging that each be less than a toxic dose, since the total toxicity is from 37 to 75 times the toxic dose in animals!
So what we can do to protect ourselves?
Rethinking the dry cleaning
Servan-Schreiber Avoid PERC and tetrachlorethylene in the dry cleaning to air dry clothes outdoors for several hours before using, or go for wet cleaning, liquid CO2 or silicon.
Avoid aluminum
He tells us to avoid deodorants and antiperspirants that contain aluminum, especially for women who shave armpits as this facilitates the penetration of aluminum.
Avoid Phthalates
using natural cosmetics According to Servan-Schreiber, we avoid cosmetics, shampoo, lotions, gels, hair dyes, nail polish and sunscreen contains estrogen, parabens or phthalates, and perfumes contain phthalates (most of them do).
Use household cleaners green
Also warns against chemical pesticides and insecticides domestic heating plastic containers made of PVC, the preparation of food in Teflon pans and scratched common household products like detergents, disinfectants and toilet bowl sanitizers.
Beat the chemical overload
For me, it is obvious that the wide range of chemicals that gypsum in ourselves and use freely around our homes, along with the numerous pesticides that are eating, contribute to the cancer epidemic.
